I'm sure many of you, like me who took up writing find the process of the act quite magical. Well, l've just learnt an interesting fact.
The words Grammar and Glamour are linked by magic. The word grammar came via the French 'gramaire'. The Latin, 'grammatica' and the Greek ' grammatike'. In the Middle Ages, the Latin 'Grammatica' was often used to mean learning. Many people associated scholarship with magic, grammar then seemed to have taken on the meaning 'Enchantment' & 'Magic'.
It was in Scottish English in the 18th century that the spelling changed from 'grammar' to 'glamour' occurred and the form glamour became fixed in the meaning 'magic' and later 'an attractive and exciting quality'
Similarly Grimoire 'a book of spell' drives from an alternative spelling of French Grammarire or 'grammar'
So when you reached for your book to check your grammar you are in affect reaching for your 'book of spell.'
It's more than a sleight of hand, more than doing it with mirrors and so much more than the quickness of the hand deceiving the eyes, it is in fact thousands of years of the evolution of the English language that has created the magic which is writing.
Have a great weekend writing, or preforming magic! 😂
